Early Time Fracture Diagnostics and Performance Prediction in the Montney – SPE Calgary Seminar in Calgary Petroleum Club

September 19, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

$15 – $70
Early Time Fracture Diagnostics and Performance Prediction in the Montney

With the increasing complexity and capital cost of developing unconventional reservoirs, it is critical for operators to optimize completion designs and field development plans.

However, one of the biggest challenges that have plagued the industry is a lack of effective and cost-efficient methods to diagnose these fracturing treatments’ efficacy before executing their next pad, leading to a perpetual cycle of knowledge lagging behind a full drilling program behind capital spending.

In this presentation, a new workflow for fracture diagnostics, optimization, well performance prediction, and field development planning will be demonstrated through a widespread application throughout the unconventional Montney.

The new workflow is based on the application of Flowback Analysis (FBA). FBA is a low-cost method that analyzes post-frac flow test data to diagnose completions and estimate key fracture and SRV/matrix properties using less than two weeks of flowing data.

With the application of this new workflow, operators are able to leverage commonly available data to diagnose and optimize completions, predict well performance and maximize the value of available assets.

Speaker Bios

Dmitry Deryushkin, MEng, P.Geo.

Technical Director, Subsurface Dynamics Inc.

Dmitry is an Engineering Professional with extensive Canadian and International experience in reservoir engineering, completions, and production optimization. He has engaged in numerous unconventional and tight reservoir studies with a key focus on hydraulic fracture simulation, well placement, completions optimization, and reservoir performance simulation. Those studies ranged from fully implicit geomechanical modeling, fracture growth dynamic simulation, and production optimization. But Dmitry’s reach goes beyond traditional engineering realms. He’s been the visionary behind numerous technology development projects, pioneering real-time completions optimization and groundbreaking initiatives like cross-well tomography for real-time completions monitoring, known as FracFinder.

With a keen eye on hydraulic fracture simulation, well placement, completions optimization, and reservoir performance simulation, Dmitry’s studies are a fusion of art and science. He’s explored the intricate realms of fully implicit geomechanical modeling and fracture growth dynamic simulation, orchestrating symphonies of production optimization.

Jesse Williams-Kovacs, PhD, P.Eng.

Senior Reservoir Engineer, Subsurface Dynamics Inc.

Jesse is a Professional Engineer with 12 years of Canadian and International experience in reservoir and exploitation engineering. Jesse is a Qualified Reserves Auditor with experience in Exploration, Development, Business Development, Acquisition and Divestures, Property Evaluations, and Reserves Evaluations, and Technical Due Diligence. Over the course of his career, he has developed extensive experience in unconventional plays in Canada (incl. Montney and Duvernay), the United States (incl. Permian Basin, Eagle Ford, Marcellus, and Austin Chalk), and internationally (incl. Vaca Muerta Shale).

Jesse is an expert in rate/pressure-transient analysis, analytical and numerical reservoir simulation and modeling, decline-curve analysis, and economic modeling. He is also a pioneer and subject matter expert in flowback analysis (FBA), developing one of the first techniques for quantitative analysis while completing his PhD with Dr. Christopher Clarkson.

Throughout his career, Jesse has co-authored over 30 technical papers, been an invited speaker at over 20 conferences and workshops, and recently co-authored an SPE Monograph chapter focused on flowback and early-time reservoir diagnostics.
